"So what do you guys/gals do about bands that refuse to play in keys
that you can sing in?"
You've actually hit upon one of the two best things about singing in a
band. First, you get to choose the song, as the singer usually has to
know the song better than anyone else (so it better be one the singer
has prepared). Second, you get to choose the key. Think about it: on
harmonica, you should have the instruments and technique to play in any
key that is called. The same goes for guitar, bass, etc. The singer's
vocal range is always the limiting factor.
If your band is resisting the keys you call out as singer, tell them it
will freshen up the songs because they'll sound a little different to
the audience in the keys you specify. If that fails, get a new band.
Seriously. A guitar player may not be able to play his favorite solo
licks in F#, but he can at least play the rhythm, and he can learn new
licks in that key over time.
